This Google patent describes a platform and method for context-based natural language processing in dialog systems. Developers build dialog system engines by defining intents, entities and context elements; at runtime the engine receives a user request plus device/environment attributes, identifies a conversational or environmental context, assigns a context label, selects a matching dialog rule (intent) tied to that context, applies the rule to generate a linguistic or fulfillment response, and returns the response to the user. The approach improves handling of underspecified utterances (e.g., “What about LA?” or “Next”) by using stored context and multimodal attributes.
