This Google patent describes a system developed by Google for automatically demoting (lowering the ranking of) search results that are deemed low-quality or abusive. It works by calculating a “goodness value” for each individual search result and for the overall search query itself. A dynamic threshold is then set based on how risky the query is — riskier queries (those that tend to attract more spam or abusive content) trigger stricter demotion thresholds, while safer queries are more lenient. The system also self-corrects over time by analyzing historical search traffic and penalizing itself when it wrongly demotes good content, allowing the threshold function to be tuned for greater accuracy.
