Ultimate guide for llm readability optimization and better chunk relevance

5/5 - (1 vote)

In many discussions about generative engine optimization, too little distinction is made between the different goals that GEO can pursue.

  • Improving the citability of LLMs in order to be cited more often with your own content as the source. I call this LLM readability optimization.
  • Brand positioning for LLMs in order to be mentioned more often as a brand. I call this brand context optimization.

Each of these goals pursues different optimization strategies. That is why they must also be considered separately.

This article will focus on LLM readability optimization.

The Guide about Brand Context Optimization you can find here.

How to Make Your Content Citation-Worthy for AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Mode

In the era of generative AI, content optimization has evolved beyond traditional SEO. To be cited by AI systems like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Mode, your content must meet specific quality criteria that enable Large Language Models (LLMs) to process, understand, and reference it effectively.

LLM Readability and Chunk Relevance are the two most influential factors for becoming citation-worthy in generative AI responses. This guide provides a comprehensive framework with practical examples to help you optimize your content for the AI age.

This article is created based on my own research started 2023 to better understand methodologies behind Generative Passage Based Retrieval. All researched patents you can find here: https://www.kopp-online-marketing.com/patents-paper-tag/passage-based-retrieval

What is LLM Readability?

LLM Readability describes how well content can be processed and captured by large language models. It encompasses natural language quality, structuring, information hierarchy, context management, and loading time. Content with high LLM Readability is more likely to be extracted, understood, and cited by AI systems. It is a concept developed by myself for better understanding the important factors behind citation worthiness. The concept of LLM Readability was developed by myself in 2024.

What is Chunk Relevance?

Chunk Relevance describes how well individual content passages can be processed by LLMs and how semantically relevant they are to specific aspects of a topic. LLMs process texts in sections called chunks. Each chunk should represent a clearly delineated, self-contained information unit that is understandable even without surrounding context.

How AI Search Systems Work: Understanding RAG

To understand why LLM Readability matters, you need to understand how AI search systems generate responses. These systems have two options: generate responses from their foundation model (like GPT or Gemini) or use a grounding process through Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to enrich their knowledge with information from a search index.

The RAG Process:

  1. Information Retrieval: The system searches external databases and websites to find relevant information matching the user prompt. The original query may be rewritten into multiple sub-queries.
  2. Source Qualification: Quality classification filters (like E-E-A-T at Google) compile a relevant set of trustworthy source documents.
  3. Chunk Extraction: From the qualified documents, passages (chunks) relevant to the sub-queries are identified and weighted.
  4. Context Provision: The relevant information is provided to the generative model as additional context.
  5. Generation: The LLM uses this context together with the user input to create the final answer.

Key Insight: Even if your document is not the most relevant in the source set, you can still be cited if your chunks are more relevant or your structure can be processed better than competitors

Why are content structure and passage relevance or chunk relevance so important?

AI systems rely on well-structured content to efficiently identify and process relevant information and generate correct answers.

  • Passage-based search: Search engines extract and evaluate individual text sections (passages), not just entire documents. A clear structure helps to identify these passages.
  • Context evaluation: The hierarchical structure (headings) is used to evaluate the context of a passage. More deeply nested, specific headings can increase relevance.
  • Thematic search (AI overviews): AI summarizes passages from top documents into “topics.” A clean structure enables AI to correctly recognize and cluster the main topics of your page.

The Aufgesang LLM-Readability Score

For our agency Aufgesang, we have developed an LLM readability score based on the most important factors for LLM readability.

The 7 Key Factors for LLM Readability Optimization

Below you will find the key factors and specific positive and negative examples for each factor.

Factor 1: Natural Language Quality
